11 different entrepreneurs received awards at this years Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition with SPLT taking home the $500,000 grand prize followed by Autobooks in second and JOOL in third.

A union-led effort that's helping improve homes and create jobs in Detroit is being expanded to other rustbelt cities as part of a $2.1 billion effort to help communities struggling with aging neighborhoods, disinvestment and unemployment.

In January, more than a third of lawmakers in the Michigan House will be new which will influence how big-ticket policy items are handled in Michigan, though in ways that won't be clear until after the Nov. 8 election.

Six bills intended to streamline Michigan brownfield redevelopment laws are headed to the state House of Representatives. The bills propose a number of changes that aim to make state laws governing brownfield redevelopment authorities more consistent across the board.

Kettering University received $1.9 million for completion of phase two of the Kettering University GM Mobility Research Center. The University of Michigan-Flint received $400,000 to establish a University Center for Community and Economic Development.

By the end of the year, two separate but similar funds of $1 million and $2 million each could begin offering grants to university researchers and entrepreneurs seeking to validate innovations and prove out their concepts. A third fund would support angel investments.

A three-story building in Detroit's New Center neighborhood will undergo a renovation, transforming the structure into the Shoppes at Woodward. It will house the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, a restaurant and residential units.
