Voters in NC County to Decide on $2.4B Transit Plan
Wake County voters at the ballot booth this year will face whether to support a half-cent sales tax to help fund a 10-year, $2.4 billion transit initiative, one of 27 such transit projects at stake across the country.

Duke Energy Wants to Build a $55M Plant at Duke University
The $55M Duke University project will be a 21-megawatt plant with a single combustion turbine. It will use waste heat from electricity production to provide high pressure steam to power equipment and heat for use on the campus.

Energy from NC Solar Farm to Power Boston Medical Center and MIT
A group of institutions in the Boston area have signed an agreement to purchase almost all of their electricity through a new solar farm being constructed in North Carolina. The 650-acre project — the largest renewable-energy project ever to be constructed in the U.S. through an alliance of different buyers — will be completed by the end of this year.

Hurricane Matthew Hits Agriculture Hard
In addition to the toll on humans, their homes and livelihoods, an agricultural disaster has unfolded in Robeson County and other areas hit by Hurricane Matthew. State agriculture officials do not have damage estimates, but the 48 counties affected by the storm are some of North Carolina's largest agriculture counties.

EPA Announces $5.5M Settlement for Cleanup of Ward Transformer Superfund Site in Raleigh
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a settlement with 173 parties to clean areas surrounding the Ward Transformer Superfund Site (Site) in Raleigh, N.C. The consent decree requires the settling parties to fund and perform an estimated $5.5 million cleanup of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from lower Brier Creek, Lake Crabtree, lower Crabtree Creek and nearby tributaries.

Mayor calls $74M Bond Referendum Catalyst for Equity
Brochures advocating the approval of $74 million in bonds greeted audience members at every table and set the tone for the State of Asheville speech delivered by Mayor Esther Manheimer on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The flyers, paid for by Go AVL Bonds Committee, advised, "Financial experts agree that bonds are the smart way to build a city," but don't cite which financial experts are being referenced.

Charlotte Sticks with Wells Fargo Securities
Charlotte, N.C., will buck a recent trend and keep embattled Wells Fargo Securities on its sale of up to $150 million of general obligation bonds, saying the investment bank has served the city well.

Corning Optical to Add 205 Jobs in Hickory and Winston-Salem
Corning Optical Communications will expand operations at its North Carolina facilities in Hickory and Winston-Salem. The company plans to add 205 jobs and invest nearly $83.5 million in the state over the next five years.
