NOFO: Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program
This competitive program helps rural communities use advanced telecommunications technology to connect to each other - and the world - overcoming the effects of remoteness and low population density. Based on Fiscal Year 2026 appropriated funding, the agency estimates that approximately $27 million will be available. As permitted, they also will make available any unused appropriations from prior fiscal years, and can increase funding if additional appropriations become available. Applications are due June 30, 2026.

NOFO: Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER)
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, "front line" firefighters available in their communities. The goal of SAFER is to enhance the local fire departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards established by the NFPA (NFPA 1710 and/or NFPA 1720). Applications are due June 22, 2026.

The Bond Market Is Sounding an Alarm. It Could Mean Big Trouble for the Stock Market
The yield on Treasury bonds has increased dramatically in recent months as the Iran war has caused inflation to accelerate, indicating that investors expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. Historically, the onset of a new rate-hike cycle has coincided with a decline in the S&P 500.

NOFO: DOE Opens $3.5M Microgrid Funding Opportunity for Remote Communities
The U.S. Department of Energy opened a new funding opportunity offering up to $2.5 million in direct project support and about $1 million in technical assistance to support microgrid development in remote and isolated regions. Applications are due July 2, 2026.

House Passes Amended 21st Century Road To Housing Act
The U.S. House of Representatives passed an amended version of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act (H.R. 6644), sending the bill back to the Senate for further consideration. The House-amended version would authorize incentives to build new homes, create a program to convert abandoned buildings into housing developments, and establish new grants to modernize existing homes, among other provisions. The package also includes a section on "Housing Supply Frameworks," which would establish guidelines and best practices for zoning and land-use policies.

Jackson, MS, Pushing Forward with a $100M Infrastructure Plan
Jackson is pushing forward with a major multi-million-dollar infrastructure plan. This totals more than $100 million in infrastructure projects, including bridge repairs, drainage upgrades and street improvements. Funding also extends beyond large-scale construction projects, covering ongoing maintenance and city services that support daily operations.

$46M EPA Boost Speeds Des Moines Lead Pipe Removal
Work will begin in Des Moines' Drake neighborhood next month to replace about 120 lead service lines, the first phase of Des Moines Water Works' efforts to address the potential toxic threat to families across the metro. The work is slated to start as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it's sending $46 million to Iowa for lead pipe replacement efforts. The federal dollars will be placed in a state revolving loan fund and target disadvantaged neighborhoods.
