NOFO: EPA Announces $30M to Help Small and Rural Communities Protect Their Water
The EPA announced the availability of $30M in grant funding, as part of the agency's RealWaterTA Initiative. This newly available funding supports technical assistance and training to benefit small drinking water and wastewater systems and to help private well owners improve drinking water quality. RealWaterTA funding helps connect small and rural drinking water and wastewater systems with tried-and-true services, such as engineering and design expertise, operational support, workforce development, and financial management. The deadline to apply is May 13, 2026.
NOFO: Regional Alliances and Multistakeholder Partnerships to Stimulate (RAMPS) Cybersecurity Education and Workforce Development
The NIST RAMPS program is seeking applications from eligible applicants for activities to establish community-based partnerships to develop cybersecurity career pathways that address local workforce needs. Effective multistakeholder workforce partnerships will organize multiple employers with skill shortages in specific occupations to focus on developing the skilled workforce to meet industry needs within the local or regional economy. The deadline to apply is May 28, 2026.
NOFO: USDA Announces Specialty Crop Investment Thanks to Working Families Tax Cuts
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced the availability of over $275M in grant funding in FY2026 for the US specialty crop industry through the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI), the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP), and the Specialty Crop Multi-State Program (SCMP). USDA is providing $175M per year for SCRI, more than double the previous amount of $80M per year. Total available funding for SCBGP and SCMP increased from $85M to $100M per year starting in FY2026.
Kansas City Proposes $600M Royals Stadium and Entertainment District
The City of Kansas City has unveiled a $600M proposal to construct a new MLB stadium for the KC Royals and develop a new baseball district. Funded through bonds, TIF, and sales-tax exemptions under a 30-year lease, the project emphasizes public involvement in shaping the new downtown destination that includes parks, office suites, restaurants, and housing.
Treasury Releases Guidance on OZ 2.0 Census Track Nomination Process
The Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service issued guidance to the Chief Executive Officers of any State, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories regarding the procedure for nominating population census tracts to be designated as qualified opportunity zones (QOZs) under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill. This guidance officially identifies eligible census tracts under Opportunity Zones 2.0.
U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $8.3M to Support Economic Development Projects in Three States
The U.S. EDA announced that it has invested $8.3M to support economic development projects in South Dakota, Colorado, and Ohio. The awards are provided through EDA's Public Works and Economic Adjustment Assistance programs, which leverage existing regional assets and support the implementation of economic development strategies to support distressed communities.
$26.8M Awarded to Build and Preserve Affordable Housing in Austin
The Austin City Council and the Austin Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) have recently approved just under $26.8 million to support eight affordable multi-family and ownership housing developments across the city, including Districts 1, 2, 3, and 5. Funding for these developments comes from a combination of General Obligation Bonds, Project Connect Anti-Displacement funds, HOME Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) funds, and Homestead Preservation District Tax Increment Financing. These investments create and preserve both rental and ownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income households.
