Rehabilitation tax credits were established to discourage unnecessary demolition of older buildings and to slow capital flight from older urban areas. These credits frequently close the financing gap needed to restore the nation's aging storefronts, historic buildings, and other treasures of the built environment.

The New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) was created to address the lack of capital available to business and economic development ventures in low-income communities, providing the incentive of a federal tax credit to individuals or corporations that invest in Community Development Entities (CDEs).

Many tax credits exist to either repair environmental damage or prevent it from happening in the first place. Browse here to learn about the various ways state and federal governments are using tax credit programs to clean up brownfields, build environmentally efficient structures, and preserve quality of life in their communities.
