CDFA Announces 2023 Class of Caren S. Franzini Fellowship
The Council of Development Finance Agencies is honored to announce the 2023 class of the Caren S. Franzini Fellowship which includes four outstanding development finance professionals. The Caren S. Franzini Fellowship was established in 2017 by the CDFA Board of Directors to recognize the exemplary leadership of Caren Franzini, a past President of CDFA and former CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.

Opportunity Appalachia Driving Investment to Underserved Communities
Opportunity Appalachia has announced 33 projects seeking $187 million in financing while creating an anticipated 3,000 jobs. The primarily rural investment opportunities include downtown development, manufacturing, IT, healthcare, education, food systems, clean energy, and heritage tourism and recreation. All projects will be featured at the virtual Opportunity Appalachia Investor Convening on May 31-June 1, 2023.

Maryland Pledges $15M in SSBCI Funds to Lendistry
Maryland announced a $15 million commitment to minority-led small business lender Lendistry to provide relief to small businesses. The commitment is the latest investment through the State Small Business Credit Initiative. Lendistry will be able to lend up to $250,000 to small businesses that are owned and operated by Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Individuals; Very Small Businesses; or are in Community Development Financial Institutions Investment Areas.​​

Debt Limit May Not Be Reached Until the End of July
If the U.S. government doesn't run out of borrowing power by mid-June, the nation probably won't risk breaching the debt limit until "at least the end of July," Congress' nonpartisan budget office said. That longer-range scenario could wreck Congress' annual month-long break in August, keeping lawmakers in Washington to settle on a plan for raising the debt limit and preventing the nation from defaulting on its $31.4 trillion in debt. 

White House Highlights Success of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in Infrastructure Week
As part of the President's Investing in America agenda, the Biden Administration is rebuilding our roads and bridges, replacing lead pipes to provide clean water, cleaning up legacy pollution, expanding access to affordable, high-speed internet, and ushering in a new era of clean energy. The White House has announced over $220 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding, including over 32,000 specific projects and awards, across over 4,500 communities in all 50 states, D.C., and territories.

4 New Affordable Housing Developments Approved By Pinellas Commission in Florida
The Pinellas County Commission took another big step toward creating more affordable housing with the appropriation of $12.51 million in county funds to support four developments in Lealman, Ridgecrest, and St. Petersburg, totaling 307 units. The planned apartments further the county's new Housing Action Plan announced at the Pinellas County Housing Summit to create quality homes that are affordable to people of all incomes.

Alabama House Passes Brownfield Development Bill
The House of Representatives awarded its approval to legislation sponsored by State Rep. Chip Brown, R – Hollinger's Island, that expands Alabama's economic development opportunities by offering liability protections for those who redevelop Brownfield sites in various regions of the state.

Understanding the Barriers to Regenerative Agriculture on Native Land
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC) are joining forces on a three-year study with Native American ranchers that will track costs, loan terms, and soil carbon improvements with the goal of bringing regenerative agriculture programs to Native communities.
