CDFA Mentorship Program, in collaboration with CHFA and US Bank

CDFA Mentorship Program Overview: Thrive Together

The CDFA Mentorship Program, in collaboration with U.S. Bank and the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, is a member-exclusive initiative designed to intentionally foster both personal and professional growth within the development finance community. Guided by the belief that we thrive together, this group and self-guided program connects seasoned industry experts with individuals seeking guidance, support, and direction in their careers.

The purpose of this program is to create meaningful mentoring relationships where mentors and mentees grow together—cultivating confidence, nurturing meaningful connections, and celebrating progress through shared experiences, support, and connection. Through these goal-oriented relationships, participants engage in dynamic knowledge sharing, build trusted avenues for guidance and encouragement, align around intentional goal setting, contribute to a constructive feedback process, and expand their professional networks. Together, these elements create a space where both mentors and mentees can thrive—contributing to a stronger, more connected industry.

CDFA Mentorship Program Format

  • Multimodal with Structured Learning opportunities & One-on-One Mentor/Mentee Engagements
  • Virtual Group Interactions & Collaborations
  • In-Person Meet-Up at the annual CDFA National Development Finance Summit (optional)
  • Role Guidance and Support from CDFA

Thrive from Experience

One-on-One Self-Guided Session 1:
Getting to Know Each Other
Mentors and mentees will coordinate time for a virtual—or in-person, if feasible—coffee meeting to get to know one another. They will explore each other’s backgrounds and interests while beginning to surface possible areas for development, drawing connections through shared experiences.
CDFA Led Virtual Learning Experience 1:
Sharing Stories that Shape Us
Take a break from the daily grind and bring your lunch to this engaging virtual learning session. In a guided, group setting, mentors will share their personal career journeys, challenges they've overcome, and key lessons learned. Through storytelling and open discussion, participants will gain valuable insights and recognize the power of lived experience as a foundation for personal and professional growth.

Thrive with Purpose

One-on-One Self-Guided Session 2:
Finding Focus
Mentees will take the lead to schedule a virtual lunch—or in-person, if feasible—with their mentor for a conversation focused on dreams, values, and vision for the future. Together, they’ll explore what energizes them, what they’re proud of, and where they hope to grow. Mentees are asked to share obstacles they’re facing, while mentors will provide guidance, encouragement, and insights to help clarify direction. This meeting encourages reflection on strengths, passions, and purpose.
CDFA Led Virtual Learning Experience 2:
Resilience in Action
Join CDFA and fellow program mentors and mentees for a virtual lunch session! This guided conversation explores how professionals navigate uncertainty, build resilience, and stay grounded. Through self-reflection and intentional goal-setting exercises, mentees will identify areas for growth, while mentors share practical tools and strategies for supporting others through change and challenge.

Thrive with Intention

One-on-One Self-Guided Session 3:
Vision into Action
This session offers mentors and mentees the space to pause, reflect, and begin translating aspirations into a personal development plan. Whether over a relaxed virtual break or an in-person coffee, this is a chance to talk candidly about where the mentee sees themselves in the future—and what steps might help get them there. Mentors and mentees will work together to explore both short- and long-term goals, asking, “Where do I want to be in 1 year, 3 years, 5 years?

Start outlining meaningful short- and long-term goals, while identifying what kind of support or resources might be helpful along the way. This isn’t about perfecting a plan—it’s about beginning the conversation. Focus on what matters most, where growth feels exciting, and how to turn that vision into manageable, motivating action. Regular check-ins and honest dialogue will help bring clarity and momentum over time.
CDFA Led Virtual Learning Experience 3:
Goal Setting
Don’t forget your lunch for this guided, interactive workshop designed to help program participants set meaningful, long-term goals. Through practical exercises and group discussions, we will explore how to align personal values with professional aspirations, ensuring goals are achievable connected to core motivations. By providing effective strategies to break goals into manageable, actionable steps, mentors and mentees will gain the tools needed to stay focused, track progress, and adjust their approach as needed, ultimately building a clear, purpose-driven roadmap for success.

Thrive to Advance

One-on-One Self-Guided Session 4:
Reflect & Reach Out
Mentees choice! Whether you prefer to start your day with coffee and conversation, end it with collaboration and a cocktail, or anything in between, mentees will take point and coordinate this learning experience with their mentor. This session will focus on providing thoughtful feedback, reviewing progress, and identifying potential connections or communities that can support the mentee’s ongoing growth.
CDFA Led Virtual Learning Experience 4:
Feedback, Encouragement & Connection
During this final group lunch, CDFA will facilitate the discussion while mentors and mentees explore the value of giving and receiving feedback that supports growth, learning, and self-awareness. Emphasizing the importance of cultivating strong, authentic professional relationships rooted in trust and mutual respect, participants will consider key questions: Have I had enough? Do I have enough? Do I want more?—inviting them to assess their professional journey and envision what comes next.

-Guidelines & Ethics

To ensure a positive, respectful, and productive mentoring relationship, all participants in the CDFA Mentorship Program are expected to adhere to the following ethical guidelines:

General Program Expectations

The CDFA Mentorship Program ideals include mutual growth, learning, and support. Curiosity, open dialogue, and the exchange of ideas and experiences are expected within the mentor/mentee relationship. Honest and respectful feedback from both sides is crucial to the success of these relationships. If at any time, a mentor/mentee has any concerns regarding the program itself, ethical issues, or misconduct, program administrators should be notified immediately.

Respect & Professionalism

Participants will treat one another with courtesy, respect, and professionalism at all times. CDFA mentors and mentees will value diversity and promote an inclusive environment, free from discrimination, harassment, or bias based on race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected status. Mentors should avoid any form of favoritism, bias, or discriminatory behavior, and professional boundaries should be maintained.

Mentors and their mentees shall not engage in personal relationships (e.g., romantic, financial, etc.) and shall avoid any behavior that could be interpreted as coercive, inappropriate, or exploitative. The mentorship relationship shall not be for personal gain, private company gain, or advancement outside the scope of the program’s purpose.

Confidentiality

All program participants shall maintain strict confidentiality regarding all personal or professional information shared during mentoring sessions. Sensitive information shall not be disclosed to an outside individual and/or organization without express permission from the other party, unless required by law or program policy (e.g., risk of harm, unlawful behavior, sexual misconduct, etc.).

Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest occurs when personal, professional, or financial interests could compromise the effectiveness of the mentor/mentee relationship. Conflicts of interest include but are not limited to competing interests, financial or personal entanglement, and/or conflicting loyalties. Mentors/mentees shall disclose any potential conflicts of interest that may impact the mentorship within 24 hours of matching.

Integrity, Honesty & Competence

Participants shall be honest about their capabilities, experiences, and limitations. Mentors should offer guidance only within their areas of expertise and refer the mentee to others when/if necessary. Mentors and mentees should communicate openly and honestly regarding areas of competence. Mentors should be committed to providing accurate, constructive, and thoughtful feedback and guidance; all program participants should engage in continuous self-reflection and learning. Misrepresentation of skills, qualifications, or intentions is grounds for termination from the program.

Commitment & Accountability

Roles, responsibilities, and expectations should be discussed, clearly defined, and agreed upon between the mentor and mentee by the end of the first one-on-one engagement. Mentor/mentee goals should be established and measurable, and each party shall follow through on their assigned tasks. Program participants are accountable for their commitments (e.g., meeting regularly, preparing for discussions) and are expected to meet all agreed-upon meeting times and deadlines. Each party shall notify the other in advance if rescheduling is necessary. Missed meetings or disengagement should be addressed respectfully.

Voluntary Participation & Program Eligibility

Participants in the CDFA Mentorship Program must be employed by a CDFA Member Organization that is active and in good standing. Participation is entirely voluntary and requires participants to maintain their eligibility. Mentors/mentees may withdraw at any time, without penalty, by submitting a written request to Noelle Sheets, VP Knowledge & Networks, at . An effective date and the reason for withdrawal must be provided. If at any time, CDFA program leadership believes either party has violated any program guidelines or ethics, they may be removed permanently from the program and deemed ineligible to return. If such a situation occurs, the party shall be notified in writing.
