Alabama Closes Bond Deal to Build Mega-Prisons
Alabama on Tuesday closed a $509 million bond deal to help build two supersize prisons amid lawsuits by inmates bidding to block the project. The Alabama Finance Department confirmed that the bond sale, which had been approved last month, was finalized. The deal closure comes after criminal justice reform activists had strived for more than a year to disrupt the sale.
Meriden Housing Authority in Connecticut Authorizes $129M in Bonds for Projects
The Meriden Housing Authority Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 to issue bonds on behalf of the Maynard Road Corp. to develop 100 apartment units, a black box theater and commercial space for no more than $75 million. The MHA board also approved by a 3-2 margin a resolution to issue up to $54 million in bonds for the Yale Acres Community Center project.
New Jersey School Board Unanimously Approves $37M School Bond Issuance
The Summit Board of School Estimate unanimously approved the Board of Education's $37 million bond project proposal at a meeting at the high school in early July. In addition to a handful of school administrators, there were only a few members of the public in attendance.
Bluffton, SC Issues TIF Bond for Capital Improvements in Renovation Project
The town of Bluffton unanimously voted to approve the nearly $60.5 million budget for fiscal year 2023, which includes a proposed TIF bond that will accelerate the much-anticipated completion of the New Riverside Barn Park. This project would renovate the barn to create an event space plus parking, trails, open fields for community events, site furnishings, destination playground, lighting, landscaping, and safety cameras.
Ice Arena Proponents in Massachusetts Address Concerns About Additional $10M Bond
The community room at the Watertown Police Department was packed with citizens interested in learning more about a proposed $10 million bond for the multi-purpose ice arena during the public presentation Thursday. The city has committed $25 million to the project, which includes $20 million in bonds and $5 million in local funds.
Newton Board in Georgia Haggles Over SPLOST Projects
Newton County commissioners Wednesday added to projects already recommended for funding with SPLOST proceeds for the next six years. The Board of Commissioners agreed they wanted county officials to find ways to finance the completion of renovations to the former Cousins School complex and give money to the 278 Community Improvement District and the nonprofit Newton Trails organization
Dulles, VA Airport Among Largest Beneficiaries of Infrastructure Bill
Dulles International Airport will receive $49.6 million to help fund a new regional airline concourse, among 85 airports receiving part of a nearly $1 billion grant stemming from last year's infrastructure bill approved by Congress. The funding puts Dulles one step closer to the construction of a new Concourse A, which serves United Airlines' regional flights.

LA Airport Received One of the Largest Grants in a Federal Outlay
Los Angeles International Airport received a $50 million grant from the federal infrastructure bill for terminal road improvements, among the largest dispersed from the $1 billion allocated to 85 airports nationally.
Bans on Bond Proceeds Used for Religious Purposes May Now Be Unconstitutional
The court ruled last month that if a state chooses to subsidize private education, it cannot disqualify some private schools solely because of religious affiliation. The ruling could change the way some issuers go about certain financings, public finance lawyers said.
