Rep. Cartwright Discusses Infrastructure Bill's Impact on Abandoned Mine Lands Reclamation
The Infrastructure Act includes $21 billion in funding to address Legacy Pollution and can be used to clean up brownfield and superfund sites, as well as reclaim abandoned mine lands and plug orphan oil and gas wells. Pennsylvania has more unreclaimed abandoned mine land acreage than any other state in the country and represents nearly 41 percent of the country's reclamation costs. The Infrastructure Act will provide nearly $3.8 billion to Pennsylvania for reclamation efforts.

Sheet Metal Workers Open Expanded Training Center
Local 71 of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation (SMART) workers formally unveiled its newly expanded 19,000 square foot training center. The transformation of a previously vacant brownfield site into a modern training facility for the members of SMART Local 71 is not just a strategic investment that will strengthen Buffalo's manufacturing sector, it also advances key goals for the broader New York State economy.

Ponderay, ID Announces Purchase of Lakefront Property Extending the Bay Trail
The city of Ponderay announced plans to use local option tax revenue to purchase waterfront property, expanding public access to Lake Pend Oreille. The cleanup and property purchases are part of Ponderay's Front Yard Project, which encompasses the brownfields cleanup and remediation of the shoreline for public recreation, but also the construction of a pedestrian and bike passage under the railroad tracks to provide access to the lake from Ponderay's neighborhoods and commercial district.

Boston, MA Commits to Equitable Site Redevelopment
In the historic Boston neighborhood of Nubian Square, a wellspring of revitalization is replacing blighted areas with innovative community developments that seek to clean up the environment and provide affordable housing. The $20 million, 60-unit Bartlett Station mixed-use apartment building and the $18.9-million, 50-unit LEED Silver-targeted Kenzi at Barlett Station senior housing development—affordable housing projects on former brownfield sites—are examples of this trend.

Bond Commission Approves $1.3B for Transportation, Small Business
The State Bond Commission approved over $1.3 billion Dec. 21 to fund a variety of projects, including $839 million for transportation and $124 million for small business growth. Small businesses will see $124 million in investment, including $25 million for brownfield revitalization, $21 million for the Small Business Express finance program, and $4 million for a minority business loan program.

Governor DeWine in Ohio Launches Program to Help Communities Clean Up Hazardous Brownfield Sites
The new Brownfield Remediation Program, which is part of Governor DeWine's strategic efforts to invest in Ohio's future, will provide nearly $350 million in grants to clean up industrial, commercial, and institutional brownfield sites that are abandoned, idled, or underutilized due to a known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum.

Federal Grant Awarded to Help Coal Communities Redevelop
In Huntington, 100 acres of vacant manufacturing brownfields will be redeveloped in the heart of downtown. The city's Municipal Development Authority will prepare the site and upgrade its infrastructure to welcome a potential manufacturing plant, while also upgrading three historic buildings for technology reuse and building a new technology center that would create more than 100 jobs.

Warehouse Project at Former GM Plant in Livonia, MI Granted $3.7M in State Tax Credits
The Michigan Strategic Fund recently approved a tax credit of more than $3.68 million for the development of a warehouse structure on the site of the former GM spring and bumper plant off Eckles Road. That approval will allow for brownfield redevelopment at the site. The new, roughly 365,000-square-foot facility does not yet have a tenant but is expected to be a workplace with roughly 185 jobs once constructed and occupied. The investment in the facility is expected to total about $32 million.
