Brownfield Redevelopment in CT Thriving Thanks to Concerted Efforts
In the past 15 years, Connecticut has developed new financing programs to supplement taxpayer dollars and created liability relief to shield municipalities and developers from responsibility for pollutants dumped by past owners. Over the past decade, the state also has pumped more than $206 million into grants and loans for brownfield cleanups.
Missoula, MT Council Approves $610K Loan to Developers for Environmental Cleanup
The City Council's Administration and Finance Committee unanimously approved a $610,000 loan agreement with Riverfront Triangle Partners LLC to clean asbestos and other hazardous materials in buildings within the Riverfront Triangle. It's the next step toward the site eventually becoming a major hotel and convention center.
Stakeholders Debate Property Status as the Buffalo, NY Site Garners Interest
The Tonawanda Coke site could be redeveloped in five years if the 160-acre site gets cleaned up under the state's Brownfield Cleanup Program as some stakeholders hope. Other stakeholders believe that a Superfund designation is warranted. Meanwhile, several data center operators have expressed interest in the site.
Several Brownfield Megadevelopments Set to Transform Chicago, IL
Chicago developers are making bold plays to turn long-vacant brownfield sites, obsolete industrial corridors, and underutilized historic buildings into megadevelopments. Lincoln Yards, a 55-acre, $6 billion mixed-use development, is being built on remediated brownfield land. So too is The 78, a mixed-use, transit-oriented neighborhood on 62-acres of former brownfield space.
WA Legislature Approves Tax Increase, Providing Additional Funds to Brownfields
The Washington Legislature passed SB 5993. SB 5993 increases the tax on petroleum that primarily funds the state's contaminated site cleanup program, protects the funds from being used for other purposes, and expands the Washington State Department of Ecology's authority to issue cleanup grants under the Model Toxics Control Act.
TN Amends Brownfield Tax Increment Finance Law, Creating New Opportunities
Tennessee SB0355 has been signed into law. The bill eliminates restrictions and limitations in the state's Brownfield TIF Law. By expanding the range of brownfield sites eligible for tax increment financing under the Brownfield TIF Law, SB0355 creates significant new funding opportunities for brownfield redevelopment in economically disadvantaged areas, including qualified opportunity zones.
