The U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) Build America Bureau (BAB) is providing a $106.9 million Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan to the Colorado High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE) for the C-470 Express Lanes Project.

The grants from the Advanced Industries Accelerator program require a two-to-one match, so recipients of, say, a $250,000 grant will need to scrape up $500,000 of their own money. The grant program received 124 applicants for the cycle, with 18 companies awarded $2.9 million.

Businesses in Southwest Colorado will be eligible for $300,000 in federal grants, Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, said in a release. The grant will be matched by Region 9, resulting in a total of $600,000 for new rural businesses.

Despite numbers that show state economic growth as high as 5.1 percent, some economists and economic development officials in Colorado see challenges on the horizon. These include lagging economic trends in rural areas, transportation snarls, soaring housing costs and a tightening labor market.
